  • Advising a relative and/or close friend on a home defense weapon

Times are changing. Many people who have never, ever considered owning a firearm have suddenly seen the light. So, since they know you are somewhat "into guns", they seek out your counsel. What do you suggest to them, in regards to something they can use for home defense? I'm thinking very broad strokes. Handgun? Rifle? Shotgun? Anything specific? Take care. Tom Worthington

    Tom,

my choice would be a hand gun, even if it is a revolver.

being the only person I know in Wisconsin and probably now in Minneapolis who doesn't own a gun, I'll still share what a trained gun friend advised me. He told me about his thoughts years ago while teaching me gun safety and busting a few caps out at a farm I owned. He feels shotgun is the method of choice because of the scatter, a certain intimidation affect, and that the shot only goes a certain distance. A bullet can go beyond your target and hit something or someone behind it. Plus, you really can't miss with a shot gun and it messes the perp/intruder up so badly, they normally can't continue to come after you. Those were his thoughts and at least they made since to me. Now, I always add this regarding guns...are you sure you can really pull the trigger when the time comes? Do you understand that once that bullet leaves the chamber, it's not coming back if you suddenly change your mind? Can you handle body parts potentially flying all over? If so, get a gun, practice and hope you don't have to use it...it's after the guts spill...that's when the trouble can start. Sorry I don't remember what shotguns we were using, but they weren't very long. Oh, one last thing...just because I don't have a gun don't mean shit as far as blue, red, hindu, green beret or whatever you may think of me. When cornered, I will fight to the death with whatever I have around me or with my hands.....it's the perp, or me...one's going out in the bag when it really hits the fan. Life, unfortunately, where I hang my hat...is cheap. I respect individual choices to own or not own a gun. That, my friends, is in our Constitution. Good topic here!

A trained gun friend really said that you can't miss with a shotgun? Have you tried firing shotguns? Have you patterned what came out of it? At 10 yards, I get a ragged 1 inch hole from my shotgun (Federal Flitecontrol shells). I can easily miss.

Can I pull the trigger when the time comes? We'll never really know til it actually happens. However, I suspect I will be too scared to do anything else. Take care. Tom Worthington

Answer to second question...yes, that's what I meant about "busting caps ..out at the farm". Answer to first question: I'm not a gun person thus I only had one person to reference to in my blather. However, your point is well taken in that that crap we shot up seems to verify this now that you've politely pointed that out. Anyway, I'm guessing that we would rather not have to experience the onslaught of a looney toons person, but I also am guessing...no, you won't be too scared to do whatever it is you have to. Have a great week and see you at the drags online.

PFlyer-I meant I'd be too scared NOT to pull the trigger.

Any particular reason? Any particular caliber you would lean toward? Take care. Tom Worthington

Hand gun is much easier to conceal and keep out of site of the bad guy,
